Illa Eficient: New energy efficiency project in Barcelona

The “Illa Eficient” project led by the company Habitat Futura, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona City Council aims to promote energy efficiency in Barcelona, specifically in a community of buildings in the Eixample. This initiative stems from Habitat Futura’s objective of stimulating a new model of building and sustainable rehabilitation in residential buildings.

The ‘Illa Eficient’ area includes a first block of buildings between Gran Vía, Viladomat, Diputación and Calabria streets with a total of 22 buildings, 390 homes and more than 700 residents.

This community of buildings needs a comprehensive rehabilitation and energy efficiency process due to the age of their homes and the high energy consumption they require. Habitat Futura has relied on the QDE team to carry out the execution of the rehabilitation project, which consists of:

Comprehensive rehabilitation of buildings (roofs, facades, renovation of accesses, reinforcements and insulation of walls, etc.)
Installation of renewable energy technologies, in this case photovoltaic panels to optimize the energy consumption of the community.

It is estimated that the Illa Eficient communities will be able to save at least 30% of their energy consumption once the project is completed. The fundamental aspects to optimize this energy consumption are:

Lighting: the change of entrances and windows allows a redesign of the space with the aim of making the most of natural light and avoiding artificial light sources.
Ventilation: thanks to the insulation of the walls and the change in the distribution of the windows, the houses will be better prepared to adapt to cold and heat depending on the climate.
Installation of solar panels: reduction in the cost of daily electricity consumption thanks to the production of clean energy from photovoltaic panels.
Improvement of the energy efficiency of common areas: use of LED lighting in homes and common areas, adequate contracting of power, etc.
Renewal of energy efficient equipment: use of low consumption appliances, etc.
Installation of community aerothermal energy and adaptation of the boilers of the houses.
